Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji efek samping penggunaan kontrasepsi suntik, terutama Depo Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA), melalui metode narrative review. Literatur yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini mencakup studi-studi yang diterbitkan antara tahun 2019 hingga 2024, yang diidentifikasi melalui pencarian di basis data seperti PubMed, Google Scholar, dan jurnal yang terindeks dalam SINTA dan Scopus. Hasil dari tinjauan pustaka menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan DMPA memiliki beberapa efek samping signifikan, termasuk disfungsi seksual yang dialami oleh 54% pengguna, peningkatan konsentrasi timbal dalam darah, serta gangguan pada lapisan epitel yang dapat meningkatkan risiko infeksi. Di sisi lain, DMPA juga menunjukkan efek protektif terhadap perkembangan leiomyoma, dengan insidensi yang lebih rendah pada pengguna dibandingkan dengan non-pengguna. Meskipun sebagian besar penelitian tidak menemukan peningkatan risiko kanker payudara yang signifikan pada pengguna DMPA, beberapa studi menunjukkan adanya risiko yang sedikit meningkat. Oleh karena itu, penting bagi penyedia layanan kesehatan untuk memberikan informasi yang komprehensif kepada pengguna mengenai risiko dan manfaat DMPA sebelum pemilihan metode kontrasepsi.

This study aims to examine the side effects of injectable contraceptive use, especially Depo Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA), through a narrative review method. The literature used in this study includes studies published between 2019 and 2024, which were identified through searches in databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and journals indexed in SINTA and Scopus. The results of the literature review indicate that the use of DMPA has several significant side effects, including sexual dysfunction experienced by 54% of users, increased blood lead concentrations, and disorders of the epithelial layer that can increase the risk of infection. On the other hand, DMPA also shows a protective effect against the development of leiomyoma, with a lower incidence in users compared to non-users. Although most studies have not found a significant increase in the risk of breast cancer in DMPA users, some studies have shown a slightly increased risk. Therefore, it is important for health care providers to provide comprehensive information to users regarding the risks and benefits of DMPA before choosing a contraceptive method.
